God in His goodness sent the grapes, to cheer both great and small; Little fools will drink too much, and great fools not at all.” -- Anonymous

The FAB FOUR – Whites: The Four International White Grape Varieties – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris, Riesling

Each of the four classes will focus on one variety, with classic examples from the prime regions from which that variety comes. We will taste, discuss, and identify the unique qualities of each variety. We will learn how the same variety can be made in different styles, and what the winemaker does to achieve that style. We will do comparison tastings, using other varieties to help us better identify each variety’s unique qualities. Along with a clarification of varietal tastes, flavors, and textures, we will discuss the food pairing opportunities each offers. Other major white grape varieties, such as Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Viognier, and Albariáo, will also be tasted.

Graduates of this class will have a better understanding of

  • the qualities of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris, and  Riesling
  • the principal styles in which these varieties are made;
  • the regions from which they come;
  • the  foods with which they pair; and
  • their own preferences with respect to these varieties and their styles.
